Kumquats aren’t terribly exotic, but they certainly aren’t your humdrum, run-of-the-mill fruit either. They are a diminutive citrus fruit that you can eat whole–peel, pith, and all.
They’re nice. Sort of a cross between a clementine and a lime. Sweet and orange but with a little bit of a bitter tartness. They’re lovely.
And candied whole they make lovely additions to baked goods like chocolate chip, buttermilk muffins and raspberry, basil scones. Come on, even if you won’t give me the chocolate citrus combo; the kumquat, raspberry, and basil scones are pretty darn exotic! And delicious, too!
P.S. I realize this is really a day late–with Monday being a holiday, I went back to work today and have spent the whole day thinking it’s Monday, not Tuesday! Oops!
Of course, now I’m really curious to find out what those scones would taste like! Great post!
