Circles and Orbs: TPC

I’m trying out a new photography challenge (Dutch Goes The Photo’s Tuesday Photo Challenge); this week’s topic is circles. Seemed like fun!

Circles are just a two-dimensional spheres. I read about physics in my spare time. I study science policy and while I don’t need to know theoretical physics to understand science policy (certainly the policymakers don’t!), I pretend it’s for my studies rather than purely for fun. Then I feel productive! Continue reading “Circles and Orbs: TPC”

Summer in Central Park: WPC

As you can tell from the green leaves (not to mention the title of this post), I took these photos over the summer. I thought they were perfect for this week’s challenge: weathered.

There’s something quite beautiful about how nature weathers wood and metal–it sort of takes off the harsh edges, making the man-made blend with the naturally occurring. Continue reading “Summer in Central Park: WPC”

Fall is Finally Here: WPC

Finally, we are having autumnal weather in NYC! Not that I minded unseasonable warmth for two months, but it was getting old. Fall is my favorite season and it seems to be getting squeezed out.

That’s why when I was walking across the park last week and saw the leaves starting to change and the sunlight peeking through the leaves, casting a mottled light on the path I just had to take out my phone and snap a pic—even if I was running late for a meeting (don’t tell!) It’s wasn’t quite fall weather last week, but we were getting a sneak peek!

“Hear the beat of dancing feet, / It’s the song I love the melody of…”: WPC

I’m a day late (and perhaps a dollar short) for the “pedestrian” photo challenge. And that’s a shame because I took these photos the weekend before the challenge went up and they are perfect for it! It was fortuitous. But this week—well, this semester—has been terribly busy and I just lost track of time. So I won’t take any longer. Here are my photos, taken on 42nd Street, which, because of a parade on 5th Ave, was closed to traffic and became a pedestrian thoroughfare for a few hours on a Sunday.

Shakespeare’s Garden

In case you were wondering, this is Shakespeare’s Garden in Central Park, NYC. Not, say, the garden at Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. (Although I have been there. See?:

Now that was actually Shakespeare’s Garden.)

In any case, this Shakespeare’s Garden is tucked away in Central Park, nearish the W81th street entrance. It’s beautiful! Continue reading “Shakespeare’s Garden”

Out of Focus: WPC

This week’s challenge, focus, was almost too easy! I do a lot of macro and/or food photography so focus is very important. I’ve had many a photo come out terribly, with the focus just slightly off or the depth of field just a bit too wide or too narrow. On occasion, though, as the prompt reminds us, sometimes an out of focus photo can be beautiful in it’s own way. Continue reading “Out of Focus: WPC”

Path: WPC

I took this photo standing in the center of Columbus Circle looking East across Central Park South. I have a series of these photos, fiddling with shutter speed. This was one of my favorites until I noticed the shadows of people who had crossed the street during my shot. I figured I liked the shot enough to keep it, even in spite of the “ghosts” of the pedestrians and my assumption that I’d never use it. Continue reading “Path: WPC”
