The Bridges of Manhattan County: WPC

Okay, okay, it’s New York County; Manhattan is a borough. Also, there are bridges from Monroe County and Oxfordshire in here. But I couldn’t help myself.

I don’t have particularly much to say about this topic. I do, apparently, enjoy photographing bridges, so you’d think I would–you’d think wrong, though!

Still, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I’ve got plenty of those… Continue reading “The Bridges of Manhattan County: WPC”

Shakespeare’s Garden

In case you were wondering, this is Shakespeare’s Garden in Central Park, NYC. Not, say, the garden at Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. (Although I have been there. See?:

Now that was actually Shakespeare’s Garden.)

In any case, this Shakespeare’s Garden is tucked away in Central Park, nearish the W81th street entrance. It’s beautiful! Continue reading “Shakespeare’s Garden”

Out of Focus: WPC

This week’s challenge, focus, was almost too easy! I do a lot of macro and/or food photography so focus is very important. I’ve had many a photo come out terribly, with the focus just slightly off or the depth of field just a bit too wide or too narrow. On occasion, though, as the prompt reminds us, sometimes an out of focus photo can be beautiful in it’s own way. Continue reading “Out of Focus: WPC”

Earth Day and the March for Science: WPC

I admit I didn’t march in the Women’s March. I had a lot of homework and I’m not particularly fond of crowds or being up at 7 am on a freezing winter weekend. But I couldn’t resist heading to the March for Science. Not only was it being held at a more civilized hour and in my neighborhood, I’m a scientist (alright a political scientist–but my field employs the scientific method and depends on government grants too!)

I’m so glad I went. Continue reading “Earth Day and the March for Science: WPC”

Surprise: WPC

Yesterday I went to the beach. It was in the low 70s and I had the day off!

Isn’t it just beautiful? And surprise! It’s only a subway ride from central Manhattan–and still in New York City! Coney Island may be known for Nathan’s hot dogs and the cyclone rollercoaster. But it’s also got a beautiful sandy beach. Who’d have thunk this is in a city?

Also surprising is that I took these photos with my iPhone. I know these aren’t as good as they would have been if I’d brought my canon, but I hadn’t really expected to be so awed and, well, surprised, by Coney Island. Although, I suppose, that’s the point of surprises. At least my iPhone takes a reasonable photo, even with zoom–the second surprise of my day.

Path: WPC

I took this photo standing in the center of Columbus Circle looking East across Central Park South. I have a series of these photos, fiddling with shutter speed. This was one of my favorites until I noticed the shadows of people who had crossed the street during my shot. I figured I liked the shot enough to keep it, even in spite of the “ghosts” of the pedestrians and my assumption that I’d never use it. Continue reading “Path: WPC”
